LUST (2009)

I want to set up a discussion on the Seven Deadly Sins. Absolutely NOT necessarily from a religious angle, although if you want to bring that aspect in, feel free to do so. I just think it would be interesting to hear the various individual experiences of each of the said Seven Deadly Sins.

My intention is to choose one per week to discuss over the next seven weeks, so I would ask everyone to keep to the chosen sin of the post and not digress into discussing the others (unless it is specifically relevant) or, most importantly, not poach this idea to raise other posts on other sins before I've had a chance to raise it in this series. I'm sure you understand.

None of you are free of sin and you know it, so I'm sure everyone has a tale to tell. This is not intended to be a confessional, just stories and opinions. However, if anyone does want to confess anything, here's the place to do it. You never know you may feel cleaner for the telling.

The first is LUST.

Come on Mephisto. Are you telling me you're always in complete control during your lustful moments?? Buggered if I am.

Lust is surely an instinct which if uncontrolled becomes a sin?

A lust for success sounds ok to me MissChanel. Not to be confused with a lust for power which is a whole different thing to me.

I have been guilty of lust in the sexual sense many times and dont see anything wrong with it providing you can control your emotions and not let the lust take control.

Lust in a business or career sense i regard as ambition and would like to see more of it.

Well done Journeyman. I was wondering if anyone was gonna take it away from the sexual area. What about lust for life and lust for power. They're well used terms. Good or bad?

"Lust: a passionate or overmastering desire or craving (usually fol. by for): a lust for power."
Is it a 'sin'? I think not. In the right circumstances, I believe it's a natural and healthy yearning for something or someone that you believe to be out of your reach.

lust, hummm it can be very destructive, but at the same time constructive,it is probabley one of the most powerful emotion's we have next to love, and if not held back till the right time comes along , lead us in to situations we may live to regret. im not saying any more till me solicitor gets here

I also think Lust is very healthy when directed in the right way. Lust between two like minded people is exciting, passionate and fun. Lust when forced upon another person can be degrading, frightening etc, hence that would be tantamount to rape. This, in my opinion is where it would be sinful.

Like MS said it is great to have both love and lust. Having said that, there is often a connotation of something 'completely out of control' with the word lust which is not what I mean at all. Lust is not good if it is used inappropriately but if you are lucky enough to share your life with someone like minded it's fantastic.
I have always had a naughty and lustful side, it got all squashed with bad marriages and having children dampens things a little, but thank goodness, I found it again!!

@ MS - The phrase 'Seven Deadly Sins' is being used here merely as a well recognised expression for the subjects which I'm hoping to serialise for each to take as they will. I think we can take it as read that I'm not labelling anyone a sinner in the biblical sense even when I say "None of you are free of sin" in the question. You're right they are human traits, and this one in particular is an especially pleasurable one, so for the sake of this discussion, when we're talking about sins, we are talking about human traits. Mind you someone may well come along and claim that some of these traits ARE in fact sins. I might look forward to that. Wonderful answer from you by the way just a shame you couldn't share a few of your examples. I might even consider arguing with you just to get you to do that. Nah! Best not. @ Messy - Keep it to 'Lust' for this post. You'll get your chance for all the others. @ Jemma - Phwoar!!

I'm pleased to say that lust hasn't left me with regrets but have seen it happen to people close to me.

I totally agree with MS's comment and believe that Lust is a healthy and essential part of life...BUT...I also believe that when in it's strongest form it can lead us to making irrational decisions that we may regret. Oh well, maybe my comment on regret is true "If you're going to have regrets, regret what you've done , not what you haven't".

As you well know Col, (and you have put NOT in capitals,i like to think for my benefit) i dont believe in human traits being labelled as sins. But by its definition Lust being an uncontrollable sexual urge i sin quite a bit. Ive heard people say that love and lust are entirely seperate emotions but i champion the pairing of the 2, to keep the flames of passion crackling in a relationship you have to keep stoking that fire for it to never fizzle out. Lust is good and healthy.

Now this is another subject I could warm to. What do you want to hear about? I can cover theft, adultery, coveting, gluttony, averice, envy and this is just in the work place. My workplace! Or maybe some of those are SINS. I can cover them all...
